Kate was used to it. The not remembering. This time, though, it might cost her more than it protected her from.
*Is that water?*
She could hear the water from the stream, creek, or river the car had landed in seeping into the car slowly.
*God, please let it be slowly. Please let it just be a creek. Where am I?*
Everything in her world seemed to be literally upside down, wet, and spinning in agonizing increments as she tried to breathe, understand, and gather her thoughts.
*Oh my God, have I hit someone?*
She could not bear the thought of being responsible for someone else’s pain.

Kate began kicking her feet to see if by some chance she could break through the floorboard of the car. Her body would not take much more of this upside downness, and she could feel herself slip in and out of consciousness.
“Wake up, Kate!” she heard the voice again.
She came to. The water was now closer to her.
*It is not going to stop rising, is it?*
[…]
She felt like she had when she was a young girl at night, wishing her situation was not what it was, that she was not trapped and she was not hurting.
*This is not happening. This is not happening.*
